No nonsensicality GPS with a huge screen

I got TomTom550TM with regards to two weeks ago. It substituted my TomTom Go 730 with 4.3″ screen.

This will be my 5th GPS device so far. I consider TomTom Go 730 a pretty modern GPS with a lot of good features, so I will review TomTom 550TM in comparison to that one.

Let me get started with the cons:
- No Bluetooth hands-free, FM transmitter, SD reader, etc. But, I disabled the BT and FM in my Go anyway and I do not miss them at all.
- Fewer menu options; largely due to missing extra functionality, and galore when it comes to what is displayed on screen. I find displaying the current speed and the speed limit on the screen redundant, it would have been nice to have the choice to display perhaps the compass instead.

And the pros:
- Simple menu! Who cares regarding 8 things when you are attempting to just enter a new address?
- Large screen is a relief to your eyes. Driving in summer is sufficient strain on the eyes.
- Clever interface. The lanes are without doubt or question displayed on the screen at critical times.
- Reads names of streets just like the Go does (though this is a general feature now).
- Last but not the least lifetime traffic and map updates. Traffic updates are a nice to have, altho I never was in a circumstance that they were critical with my older TomTom GPS. However, map updates are a must. I found myself looking for non-existent ramps and exits more ofttimes in the last year, so 550TM with it is lifetime map updates will hopefully get rid of such annoyances.

Update: I have two essential bits of info. As others have already mentioned, the firmware upgrade added the option to view the turn-by-turn list of directions as text. This was in all probability the most significant missing feature that people felt the need for. Secondly, when I tried to update the map, I found out that I have never paired my gps with my TomTom account before. Which is bad news, because I already tossed the selling box which had the activation code. The good thing is, TomTom client service was actually helpful and within a day I got the incident solved. I had to send a copy of my buy receipt and give them the serial of my gps, and that was it. Big relief, because I in truth like this GPS, and I am planning to keep it for a couple of years at least.

Good basic GPS unit

The TomTom XXL 550T 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator is a good basic GPS navigation unit which I could commend to any person looking for a basic GPS with a more prominent screen.

That having been said, I had a good deal of issues with this unit and TomTom that prevent me from giving it five stars.

– No Manual. The TomTom XXL 550T 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator shipped in the late Spring of 2010. When I received the unit toward the end of July there was still no manual available on-line for this model. There are a heap of optional settings and even more choices if you have the Traffic feature. The “User Guide” which comes with the unit does little more than tell you how to plug it in and plan a simple route. ”TomTom in the end did put up a manual sometime in August, altho it appears to just be a link to the XL 350 manual (see underneath – it just says XL on the cover page rather of XXL, as does the cover page for the 340 XL, which is a wholly dissimilar guide describing a totally dissimilar user interface).

– Software installation. The TomTom Home software is supposed to install mechanically when you plug the unit into your computer. This may or may not take place in Windows, but unquestionably does not take place in Mac OSX. The software installer is on the unit (which appears as an external drive confusingly named “INTERNAL” on the desktop). I ran the installer, which with great success installed a way-out-of-date version of TomTom Home. When I employed the installed software to take me to the TomTom web site, it took me to the UK internetlocation rather of the USA site. This led to a lot of confusedness since the UK version of the GPS uses a dissimilar interface. The manual I downloaded was useless. Eventually the software altered itself and I found my way to the USA site. All of the other voices, remunerated or free, are a waste of time, storage space, or money.’

– Phantom Left Turn Ahead. On a highway I use frequently, there is a transition from a four-lane freeway to a two-lane highway. You genuinely don’t have to do anything except adjust your speed. However, whenever I am journeying from the four-lane portion to the two-lane part, it starts warning me in regards to a “left turn ahead.” It never tells me to turn left, it just warns me two or three times and then forgets all in regards to it once I make the transition.

There are a a couple of other considerations that fall more beneath the heading of personal predilections or situations:

– Easy to program trips. My basis of comparison is a seven-year-old factory-installed scheme that cost (at the time) more than ten times the price of the XXL 550. I find entering destination data requiring little effort and more straight-forward than on the factory system.

– Street names read out loud. This is in all likelihood the major innovation over my factory system. Even even though factory system has a much more spectacular screen, upcoming street names are often washed out by the sun or too little to read with my driving glasses.

– TomTom Home. The software works reasonably well on Mac OSX. One feature, Operate My Device, is not available, but the rest of it seems to work and it is quick to do updates and easy to add features, voices, icons, etc.

– “Safety” camera warnings. I live near a city where there are a lot of red-light-runner cameras and I know where most of them are. The warnings on the XXL 550 are somewhat accurate. An out-of-towner could refrain from a nasty surprise in the mail by paying attention to the beeps and driving safely.

– Map Corrections. One of the trips I planned while testing the XXL 550 was to a new out-of-town restaurant. The XXL 550 did not recognize the restaurant name as a Point of Interest or the address as a valid street number. It did get me nearby and once I was there I was competent to send corrections on both the restaurant and the new building in which it is located (the land had been vacant previously, so the street number did not subsist until the building was completed).

On the whole, the plusses outweigh the minuses by rather a bit, so that even with the issues and considerations outlined above, it still does what it is supposed to do and is somewhat priced in a competitory market.

UPDATE: Since I wrote this review, both the XXL 550 internal software and the TomTom Home software have been updated. There have been minor changes to the layout and design of the buttons and the Operate My Device feature in TomTom Home now works in Mac OSX.

Great GPS

I hope a heap of of you know that these negative reviews are written by Garmin employees. I’m very astonished because the primary Garmin Streetpilot a few years back was outstanding at routing, but my last two, including the 255W, was horrid, always sending me the shortest way, no matter what I put in or what the traffic was. This meant that unless I basically knew the area I was triving to, I was taking far longer than I necessitated to. Garmin just said,”We don’t see it.” I have herd this complaint from a number of Garmin users, and after questioning, I find most of them just think that’s the way GPSs are. Well, they aren’t, and my new TomTom XXL550 is awesome. Takes me the most immediate way, reroutes around traffic and obstacles quickly, and gives me far more choices than my Garmin EVER did. It shows me the overall route and asks me if I want another route.. just that is worth the price. The Garmin interface is nice, but for me, routing is everything, and the TomTom is just different, not bad. To stop a route, just tough the screen, touch route and press clear. How hard is that?
