Worked fine, with a mystery extra part!
By Richard Wilson
Note – the picture with this item is of the OLD Xadapt9, that Thule considers inferior.
I own a Thule prologue bike carrier that I applied to mount on my VW Golf with square bars. I changed my car and the new one has factory rails, so I took the probability to invest in the sleeker aero bars and figured I’d buy the Xadapt9 to fit my Prologue bike carrier to it. The instructions are OK, but a little misleading – they talk in regards to installing a 2 bolts in the front rack, and a 3rd bolt (that I didn’t have) into the rear rack (that wouldn’t do anything anyway). They likewise don’t mention that you’ll plainly need to cut the rubber gasket that fits in the aero bar to grant you to put the bolts into the track in the bars.
I got the kit through the mail, the day before a big ride, I of course I couldn’t get the Prologue to secure tightly – there was always a great deal of side to side play. So I had to take my bike apart and throw it in the back of my car. Not impressed.
I called Thule the next week and they suggested that I check that I had installed the washers that came with the rack before attempting to tighten the nuts down. Turns out that I had the washers installed as they suggested, but necessitated to go to a hardware store to buy an further and added washer for each side. That did the trick – the rack is now nice and solid up front and doesn’t wiggle around. For reference the washers are grade 8, 1/4″ split washers, and you’ll need a total of two washers each side, as the bolts are not long sufficient to grant the nuts to tighten down properly.
All in all, I’m disappointed that Thule didn’t work this out, make their instructions clearer/more precise and include the extra washers you’ll need to make this work. Having said that, I recognise that the rack is solid and I’ve applied the bike carrier a lot of times before, so I feel happy that the problem has been solved. In an extra embarrassing twist for Thule, my friend who was car pooling to the same ride with me, brought along an Inno Racks fork mount bike carrier that fit the aero bars just utterly with no fuss. Too bad Thule messed up on this one, thumbs up for a responsive client service call though.

Wrong Item
By Martin L. Tracy
What is pictured is not what was delivered to me. I’m looking for the older XADAPT 9 kit that is pictured and not the new one.

Xadapt3 for 2009 Xterra – Doesn’t Fit Right
By A. Ng
I have a 2009 Xterra with factory crossbars and according to Thule I necessitated the Xadapt3 optional package to attach my Glide and Set kayak carrier. Well, when I got the Xadapt3 and followed the instructions, I noticed that the longer 80mm bolts were too long and didn’t grant the carrier to be tightened down because the threads on the 80mm bolts only went in regards to an inch up and not the entire length of the bolt. The 60mm and 50mm bolts that came with my kayak carrier were too short and Thule doesn’t trade a 70mm bolt or a 80mm bolt that is threaded all the way to the top of the bolt. I called up Thule but all I got was a message saying to leave a message and they would return my call. Well, wouldn’t you know it, Thule never bothered to return my call. I in the long run had to rig up something myself to secure the Glide and Set kayak carrier to my factory crossbars.
Shame on Thule for listing productions that aren’t compatible and for the worst client service ever. Although I’m not sure you may call it bad client service if you don’t even get to talk with anyone, more like no client service at all.
