Rubicon

The Wrangler Rubicon joined the Jeep family in 2003. It features such goodies as particular axles with high tech built-in locking differentials; a 4:1 low-range transfer case, 4.10:1 differential gears and diamond plate rocker panels. A four-speed automatic transmission is optional. The 2003 to 2006 models also feature 16-inch alloy wheels.

The 2003 to 2004 model featured a popular NV3550 5-speed manual transmission. In 2005 that became the NSG370, a six-speed modeled on a Mercedes design. The Rubicon was modified for a limited-run promotional campaign, and featured a lot of choices not found on the regular model.

TJ and JK Wrangler Unlimited

The Unlimited Jeep model came out in two trim styles, the TJ and the JK. The TJ model was freed to the market in 2004, and is likewise known by an unofficial identification of “LJ.” It featured a 10-inch longer wheelbase than the straight Wrangler, a 3:73 gear ratio, and a specialized 331 transfer case. There was also a Rubicon Unlimited, which has the wheelbase features of the Unlimited, and the off-road features of the Rubicon, which includes a front axle with locking differentials.

The JK Unlimited model went on display in the spring of 2006, building on the TJ model with a 4-door option, and closely 21 inches added to the frame length. It features a 95.4″ wheelbase, a popular electronic stability program, optional seat-mounted side airbags, remote keyless entry, navigation system, and satellite radio. The JK Unlimited comes with more ordinary instrumentation and choices than any former Jeep Wrangler. Interestingly, it is the only 4-door convertible available in the U.S., as the Hummer H1 ragtop is no longer available to civilians.

There was even an Unlimited model designed for military use, called the J8. This Jeep model does everything larger than a standard Unlimited, and is powered by a 2.8-liter, 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with a 5-speed automatic transmission. It has a special air-intake system with filtration designed for desert combat.

Sahara

In 2005, a limited-edition Sahara Unlimited Rubicon was released, only 1,000 of which were made. Both the X and Sahara trim choices included 2×4 rear-wheel drive in the United States. The Sahara model was in a light khaki color, and has such features as a chrome grill, color matched flares, khaki colored hard top or soft top options, graphite wheels, two-tone premium seats and taillight guards. There is also a special Sahara spare tire cover and Sahara decals on the vehicle, as well as a numerical dash badge.

4Simple Installation and good looking but….

….these are unquestionably not made for offroad protection. I purchased them for the looks so to me this is a perfect. Easy install and in all probability took 10 minutes total from box to car.

I purchased these guards because I like the way they look on my Jeep. I have a hard time believing any claims that they actually protect the lights versus anything. Well, perchance if you were backing up into some sort of spear and managed to be lucky sufficient to hit one of the horizontal bars rather of the plastic lens… in that case, okay. But apart from that very specific situation, I don’t see them helping much. Here’s why I feel that way:

They mount to the lights by replacing the four screws on the light face with four somewhat longer screws. You have basically attached a hard metal object onto a more fragile surface (the plastic lens) for protection. I think of it like gluing a quarter onto a piece of glass: Hit the naked glass with a hammer, the glass will break. Glue a quarter onto the glass and hit the quarter with a hammer, the glass will still break. Of course, this is not to say that I’d rather have a set that attached directly to the Jeep’s body — then you’d just be transferring all of that energy to the body, and I’d rather replace a light than an entire painted panel.

Like I said though, I didn’t buy them for their functionality. In my opinion, they look better than the Mopar Guards and the Body Armor Guards, and they’re for less than both. I likewise think they look better than the Rampage Guards. They have a heavy-duty feel to them, and once attached they look like they’re supposed to be there, corresponding the other black elements nicely.

If you make the decision to buy these, don’t bother going to Rugged Ridge for aid if something goes wrong. I was supposed to receive 4 “large” screws and 4 “small” screws for install, and I received 6 of one and 2 of the other by accident. All of my attempts to contact Rugged Ridge for replacements were totally ignored. Luckily, I purchased them from a 3rd party Amazon vender by way of this listing and they were competent to aid me get the extra constituents I needed. If it ships from Amazon and something goes wrong, you may be required to send the whole thing back for replacement.
